Who may take the courses?
- Basic RiderCourse (BRC, BRCu): Participants must be at least 16 years of age on the date the class starts. Students under 18 need written parental consent and verification of age to participate. Neither a driver’s license nor a motorcycle learner’s permit is required to take the BRC. All participants must be able to balance and ride a bicycle. (other jurisdictional rules may apply)
- 3 Wheeled BRC (3WBRC): Participants must bring their own 3 wheeled cycles, posses a valid motorcycle permit or license and provide proof of insurance before the class starts. Side-cars are NOT permitted.
- Basic RiderCourse2(BRC2): Participants bring their own street legal motorcycle/scooter. It is recommended that you have either completed a BRC or have at least 6 months riding experience. This is NOT a beginner’s course. Students must hold a valid motorcycle permit or license and provide proof of insurance before class starts. Student with out-of-state permits may be able to transfer completion certification to their home state. Contact your state’s motorcycle rider education coordinator for details. - Advanced RiderCourse (ARC): This course is for licensed riders only. Student are required to bring their own street legal motorcycle/scooter, proof of insurance and a valid motorcycle license. Riders should have completed the BRC2 as a pre-requisite for this course.
- What is needed for the course?
- Basic RiderCourse (BRC): Proper protective gear is required for all on-cycle riding exercises. RderChoices provides a motorcycle and DOT approved helmet; students are required to furnish: eye protection, long sleeved shirts, long pants, full-fingered gloves and over the ankle footwear.
- 3 Wheeled Basic RiderCourse (3WBRC): Students are required to provide full protective gear and a street legal 3 wheeled motorcycle. Students must also show proof of license and a valid permit/license.
- Basic RiderCourse2 (BRC2): Students are required to provide full protective gear and a street legal motorcycle. Students must also display a valid motorcycle permit or license as well as proof of insurance.
- Advanced RiderCourse (ARC): Student are required to provide full protective gear and a street legal motorcycle. Students must also show a valid motorcycle license and proof of insurance.
What is the cost of the Rider Choices Courses? (costs are for in-state students, out of state may have surcharge)

Must participants have a learner’s permit before taking the courses?
- Basic RiderCourse (BRC): Students are not required to have a permit before taking the class.
- 3 Wheeled Basic RiderCourse (3WBRC): Students MUST possess a valid motorcycle permit or license.
- Basic RiderCourse2 (BRC2):Students MUST possess a valid motorcycle permit or license.
- Advanced RiderCourse (ARC): Students MUST possess a valid motorcycle license
What types of motorcycles are used?
- Basic RiderCourse (BRC): motorcycles will be less than 500cc’s, most likely is 125cc or 250cc
- 3 Wheeled Basic RiderCourse (3WBRC): Course participants bring their own street legal 3 wheeled motorcycle. Proof of permit/license and insurance are required.
- Basic RiderCourse2 (BRC2):Course participants bring their own street legal motorcycles. Proof of permit/license and insurance are required.
- Advanced RiderCourse (ARC):Course participants bring their own street legal motorcycles. Proof of cycle license and insurance are required.
What will I learn?
- The BRC offers the opportunity to learn how to control a motorcycle. Rider Choices provides motorcycles and DOT approved helmets for this 16-20 hour course. Classroom portions of the course give the student a chance to begin thinking like a motorcyclist. Riding portions of the course begin as though you’ve never been on a motorcycle and gradually work up through basic control techniques: starting, stopping, turning and shifting. Your basic skills are built upon as you practice cornering techniques, slow tight turns, hard braking skills and swerving maneuvers.
- The 3WBRC is a basic, learn to ride a 3-wheel motorcycle training class. It provides the same skills as the BRC but 3 wheels instead of 2. Side cars are not permitted.
- The BRC2 is one day course that gives a rider a chance to practice cornering, braking, swerving, crossing obstacles and slow maneuvering skills on their own motorcycle. Students must present a motorcycle permit or license and proof of insurance at the start of class. Only street legal motorcycles may be used.
- The ARC is a one day course for the licensed rider with a street legal motorcycle. Classroom activities improve perception and raises a rider’s awareness of the risks involved in riding. The riding exercises enhance both basic and crash avoidance skills. Improving braking and cornering finesse is emphasized. The course is beneficial for riders on any type of street motorcycle.
Who teaches the courses?
- Courses are facilitated by Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certified, Kentucky Motorcycle Program Approved RiderCoaches. RiderCoaches have attended a 60 hour preparation workshop and are required to attend yearly updates. All RiderCoaches are motorcyclists who ride on a routine basis.
Are the courses required to earn a motorcycle license?
- Rider Choices courses are not required to obtain a motorcycles licenses. However, the BRC, BRC2 and 3WBRC courses may allow participants to earn a state completion card that may waive a riders skills test.
Will individuals get an insurance discount after taking the courses?
- Successful completion of all of Rider Choices courses entitles you to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s completion card. Many insurance agencies will give you an insurance discount on motorcycle insurance for having completed a rider education/safety class.
What is the cancellation policy?
- Cancellation of course more than two weeks prior, receive a full refund. less than two weeks up to 48 hours prior to course receives a 50% refund. Within 48 hours, student forfeits tuition fees.
Is a motorcycle license automatically issued at the conclusion of the courses?
- Rider Choices does not issue motorcycle licenses. Successful completion of the BRC, BRC2 and 3WBRC will earn you a completion card which may waive a state rider skills test.
What are some of the problems that I may face?
- People are individuals and each of us struggle with different aspects of life. It is the same in a motorcycle class. Some typical problems RiderCoaches have observed include: the student does not really want to be in the class; the student has some short term physical limitation affecting his progress; students not practicing a RiderCoach’s tips; students not focusing on the task at hand. Our staff attempts to calm your nerves, so the FUN begins.
