Overview:
Two “Neils” came up early in the discussion, with a book recommendation to read anything by Neil Peart and a debrief of the RiderCoach Neal Postal’s epic hiking trip. They tied together around the theme that there is always another way to grow, even after significant milestones. In answer to the evening’s first question, “what is a community of RiderCoaches?” the discussion centered around courage, especially emotional courage in the face of anger or self-criticism. In answer to the second question, “how would you define RiderCoach responsibility?” the theme of trust as a combination of vulnerability, transparency, and authenticity emerged. The discussion moved to the NAMS update, leading to the value and reasoning behind standards in general. There was a query about what professional development topics RiderCoaches would be interested in, and the concept of schema was discussed. An unanswered question to ponder from that discussion was, “how much coaching is enough to develop a schema?” Are those who simply complete the minimum requirement practicing sufficiently to automate good coaching skills?
