Tuesday 1-2-3 (three ruminations) – 31 JAN 23

By Dr. Donald L. Green, 31 January 2023

For the last month, I have been on a quest to read and intake as much as possible on motorcycle braking techniques. So much so that I have been comparing different books and videos while trying to find why some continuously emphasize the topic so prodigiously.

  1. How do we facilitate straight-line braking for Novice Riders, and why? Many of the videos, articles, and books I have looked at do not focus much on straight line braking or emergency stopping. There are some resources typical for coaches like the RiderCoach Guide, Rider Handbook, and Motorcycle Task Analysis. For a novice motorcyclist, how do you facilitate this crucial motor skill task?

2) There seem to be many resources for TWO-Finger braking. It is fascinating to listen, watch, and read how justifications for the many different ways to brake a motorcycle are discussed. My question then becomes – What differentiates your facilitation about braking for Novice Riders, and why? I am very interested in knowing how your judgment of what and how to teach braking has been selected and what techniques you use!

3) The THIRD thought is probably the most discussed topic of trail braking. Everyone likes to opine on the advantages of using the technique on the street and open road to assist in cornering. As one of the most over-talked-about pieces of information, I would like to know how others facilitate curve entry and braking for Novice Riders and why? The discussion is worth having, and I am very interested in hearing about new approaches to this ancient problem and conversation.

I hope the ruminations inspire you to “put it out there” and seek more understanding. If it interests you, try Tribe Talk Happy Hour on Wednesdays, you never know where we will go with the discussions.

Have a great week!

– Don
