Where does the student need developing Are they ready for that kind of development What can I (or the institution) do to challenge the student What support can I (or the institution) do to support the student Readiness. Challenge. Support. Sanford basically laid out the form of work with students. The basic idea is that if students are ready for development in a certain facet of their lives that an environment that offers the right challenges and supports (roughly balanced) they can make those changes. Too much or too little support as well as too much or too little challenge can cause four outcomes noted in the quadrants here. The questions here are things that you could think through for each of your advisees as you notice things about them – wow, Billy didn’t do so well this fall and he seems to kind of know that he doesn’t have the skills from high school to engage in self-management Has he just identified the problem or is he maybe ready to change (this could be due to internal or external pressure). Maybe I can support him by offering resources – why don’t you go to the wellness center to talk about your bad sleep pattern, and go to academic counseling & support to talk about time management and how you might be a bit more efficient in your studying. Maybe I can challenge him by setting up another meeting to check-in with him about how things are going in a few weeks to see if he has followed through and capitalized on his readiness.
